Walking is a regular part of life for Marylanders and is an important part of almost any trip we make. In Maryland, walking is the official State exercise. Unfortunately, too many Marylander’s are being injured or killed as pedestrians on our roadways. We must focus on pedestrian needs to make walking safer and more accessible for more Marylanders. Hence, MDOT is pleased to present Walktober 2021, a month to promote and host events and webinars
spotlighting Maryland pedestrians' safety, health, and commuting options in current walk programs and initiatives.
The MDOT and a large number of partner agencies and organizations are teaming up to host Maryland’s second annual WALKTOBER celebration. Walktober 2021 is shaping up to be even bigger and better than last year: with more partners, more best practices, more resources, and an impressive line-up of speakers to help highlight important facts, programs, and initiatives to support walking.
Throughout October, MDOT and our partners will be sharing tips and resources, as well as hosting a series of free webinars on walking– or “Walkinars” – that are open to everyone. Planners can earn certification credits (AICP) for participating. The month-long celebration also includes Walk Maryland Day on October 6th, a celebration to encourage all Marylanders to get out and walk towards a more healthy and active future. Check out the website now
to schedule a walk, and then join Walktober 2021 and all of the events it has to offer!

Making Montgomery County More Walkable
By: Eli Glazier, Maryland National Capital Park and Planning Commission
Since kicking off in September 2019, the Montgomery County Pedestrian Master Plan team has been working on many exciting projects as part of our master planning efforts. The Pedestrian Plan (PMP) is the County’s first countywide master plan to improve the pedestrian environment for people walking and rolling (using a mobility device). When complete, the PMP will help the County prioritize necessary improvements to sidewalks, paths and crossings while making policy, design and
programming recommendations to create systemic change in how pedestrian spaces are constructed and maintained.

A History of a Pedestrian-Traffic Safety Movement
By: Bill Bronrott, Member, Maryland House of Delegates, 1999-2010
Bill Bronrott, Member, Maryland House of Delegates, 1999-2010 has had an extensive career advocating for pedestrians and walking. His passion for pedestrian safety combined with a vision of a more walkable Maryland began in elementary school. The creation of legislation
making Maryland the first state to have an official State exercise, which is walking, originated from a 2nd grade class in order to promote health, safety, and a sense of community.
