With more people traveling this summer, for work and fun, we wanted to share information you should know before you go.
MDOT State Highway Administration (MDOT SHA) reminds motorists to prepare their vehicles in advance to avoid and minimize roadside emergencies. This includes checking tire pressure and making sure there is a good spare tire; checking the oil, radiator, and windshield wiper fluid levels; inspecting belts and hoses; and filling up the gas tank. Also, before traveling, motorists are encouraged to visit
roads.maryland.gov to check traffic and road conditions.
All motorists play a role in promoting safety for those involved in a roadside emergency. All drivers are urged to drive sober, slow down, move over, and park their phones. When motorists see a first responder assisting another motorist in a roadside situation, it’s the law to MOVE OVER a lane. If unable to safely move over, they must slow down while passing.
As passenger traffic rebounds from the pandemic, travelers returning to BWI Marshall Airport for the first time in more than a year will notice plenty of improvements since their last trip to the Airport. From COVID-related measures to new offerings, here are a few differences to be aware of as you plan your upcoming flight.
More Electric Vehicle Charging Stations
Recently, BWI and BGE officials unveiled four new electric vehicle charging stations, which can provide up to an 80% charge in 15 minutes, in the Airport’s Cell Phone Lot. BGE is planning to add six more charging stations in the Airport’s ride-share lot for Uber, Lyft and other ride-share drivers.
The new charging stations add to the Airport’s 10 existing charging stations, which were installed in the Daily Garage and Hourly Garage in 2011.
Enhanced Cleaning COVID Measures
Enhanced cleaning and hand sanitizer stations are available. Masks are required by federal law inside the Airport and aboard planes.
Five New Gates in Expanded Concourse A
After passing through security, passengers might see the $48 million, 55,000-square-foot Concourse A expansion. The expanded concourse added five new gates to accommodate Dallas-based Southwest Airlines, with large windows and charging outlets at each seat, as well as renovated bathrooms with more space for luggage and other items travelers may have with them.
A new location of Miss Shirley’s, a Baltimore brunch favorite, headlines the restaurant options in the new Concourse A expansion, alongside R&R Seafood Bar, which is part of the same restaurant group as Obrycki’s, a former longtime Fells Point crab house now located in Concourse B.
Traveling Across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge this Summer
The Maryland Transportation Authority (MDTA) needs your help to keep our roadways safe and secure throughout the Summer Travel Season. We ask that you prioritize safety in your travel plans, devote your full attention to the road and maintain a safe following distance at all times.
The MDTA also encourages drivers to plan ahead and travel off-peak to avoid delays, particularly when crossing the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. The best times to travel the Bay Bridge each weekend include:
- Friday – before 8 a.m. and after 10 p.m.;
- Saturday – before 8 a.m. and after 5 p.m.; and
- Sunday – before 10 a.m. and after 10 p.m.
