New MDOT Applications Under Active Consideration
Special Events and Surge Sweep Overtime
Grant Program: Transit Security Grant
Agency: Maryland Transit Administration (MTA)
Description: $283K submission to provide dedicated overtime resources to support law enforcement deployments during surge sweeps and high-profile special events that elevate security risks across the transit system. These targeted operations enhance officer visibility, strengthen deterrence, and ensure rapid response capability in areas of large gatherings or elevated threat levels.
By augmenting baseline patrol staffing, this initiative bolsters protective measures, mitigates system vulnerabilities, and reinforces public confidence in the safety and resilience of the transit network.
Anti-Terrorism Team Sustainment
Grant Program: Transit Security Grant
Agency: Maryland Transit Administration (MTA)
Description: $386K submission to sustain and enhance the operational readiness of
the agency’s specialized Anti-Terrorism Team, including detecting, deterring, and responding to security threats against the transit system. The team’s mission encompasses preparedness for active shooter incidents, improvised explosive devices, and chemical, biological, or radiological hazards. Continued funding will support advanced training, equipment sustainment, and the ability to maintain a rapid deployment posture. By preserving this capability, the initiative ensures a dedicated
counterterrorism resource that protects passengers, employees, and critical transit infrastructure.
Safety Training Drills and Exercises
Grant Program: Transit
Security Grant
Agency: Maryland Transit Administration (MTA)
Description: $325K submission to support the design, execution, and evaluation of safety and security drills that test and strengthen the agency’s emergency response protocols. Conducted
in collaboration with regional partners, these exercises prepare staff and stakeholders for complex scenarios, including terrorist attacks, mass casualty events, and hazardous materials incidents. Regular training improves interagency coordination, identifies operational gaps, and ensures that frontline personnel are fully equipped to respond effectively to evolving security threats, thereby advancing the operational resilience and safety of the transit
system.
