MTA Awarded $2.8M BUILD Grant for Washington County Transit
On July 15, the Maryland Transit Administration
(MTA) was awarded $2.8 million through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s FY 2025 Round 2 Better Utilizing Investments to Leverage Development (BUILD) grant program. The funding will support the completion of the NEPA process and final design for a new administrative, maintenance, and transit vehicle storage facility in Hagerstown for Washington County Transit. The project will expand transit capacity to accommodate a growing population, enhance access to jobs and essential services, improve
stormwater management infrastructure, and increase mobility options in the region.
MARAD Awards Funding to Support Shipyard Expansion in Salisbury
The U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) has awarded $817,150 to
Chesapeake Shipbuilding Corp. in Salisbury, Maryland, to support the purchase of a 160-ton rough terrain mobile crane. The funding is part of MARAD’s efforts to strengthen America’s shipbuilding and repair industry through the Small Shipyard Grant Program, which helps shipyards invest in equipment and infrastructure to increase
productivity and competitiveness. This investment will enhance Chesapeake Shipbuilding’s capabilities and contribute to the economic vitality of Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
New MDOT Applications Under Active Consideration Eastern Bus Division Rehabilitation Project
On July 14, the Maryland Transit Administration (MTA) submitted a $18.2 million funding request to the Federal Transit Administration’s
FY 2025 Bus and Bus Facilities Program to support the Eastern Bus Division Rehabilitation Project in Baltimore City. The project will modernize and revitalize the aging facility, which serves 16 high-ridership bus routes with more than 15 million riders annually. Planned improvements include upgrades to the maintenance and wash buildings, construction of a new storage facility, site circulation enhancements, and ADA-compliant infrastructure. These enhancements will improve safety, reduce
service interruptions, and support MTA’s transition to a zero-emission bus fleet while promoting reliable transit. Middle River MTN Obstruction Removal Project for MD Air National Guard On July 3, the Maryland Aviation Administration (MAA) submitted a $10.5 million funding request to the Defense Community Infrastructure Program (DCIP) for the Middle River Martin State Airport (MTN) Obstruction Removal Project. This project, supporting the Maryland Air National Guard’s 175th Wing, aims to remove vegetative and man-made obstructions near Runway
15-33 at Martin State Airport. The proposed improvements will restore full operational use of the airport’s 8,100-foot runway, improve visibility from the newly constructed Air Traffic Control Tower, and expand the airport’s ability to accommodate larger military aircraft. American Legion Bridge + I-270 Multimodal Improvement
Project On August 1, the State Highway Administration (SHA) submitted a $864 million grant request to the Bridge Investment Program for the American Legion Bridge + I-270 Multimodal Improvement project in Montgomery County and Virginia. The project, if awarded, would
replace the aging American Legion Bridge, provide new commuter and transit options, and create new bicycle and pedestrian accommodations across the Potomac River. These improvements will enhance the state of good repair, mobility, and congestion during peak periods. |

2025 BWI Summer Youth Initiative
During the week of July 17, BWI Marshall Airport hosted its Summer Youth Initiative in partnership with Baltimore City Recreation and Parks. This unique program introduced students to a wide range of career
opportunities in the transportation sector. The Maryland Aviation Administration, along with industry partners, provided hands-on experiences that highlighted the inner workings of aviation. Memorable activities took place not only at BWI Thurgood Marshall Airport, but also at Martin State Airport and other transportation-focused sites across the region. Breaking Ground: Maryland’s First NEVI Chargers
Underway
Construction began in June on Maryland’s first electric vehicle chargers funded through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program. The first site, located at the Pilot Travel Center in Grantsville off I-68, is part of Maryland’s NEVI Round 1 rollout, which includes 130 new
Direct Current Fast Charging (DCFC) ports at 22 stations Statewide. Additional construction is expected to launch in the coming months, with all stations scheduled to be operational by April 2026. NEVI-funded chargers are strategically placed to ensure convenient access along major highways. These investments are critical to modernizing the state’s transportation infrastructure and supporting EV adoption across Maryland. |
