Safe Streets and Roads for All (SS4A) - December 13, 2023 USDOT announced more than $28 million for Implementation and Planning/Demonstration Grants across Maryland. Implementation Grants provide funding for
communities to execute strategies and projects that significantly reduce or eliminate transportation-related fatalities and serious injuries. Planning and Demonstration Grants help communities develop road safety action plans and inform improvements along corridors with safety issues. Read MDOT's press release here. Corridor Identification and Development Program - December 8, 2023 FRA announced up to $500,000 for the Diamond State Line, which will connect at least one point on the Northeast Corridor in northern Delaware (Newark or Wilmington) with a point in eastern Maryland (Salisbury or Berlin) via central Delaware, including the state capital of Dover. The
proposed corridor would provide new service on an existing alignment for visitors and residents of Maryland. If you have a recently awarded project that you would like to highlight in the next newsletter, reach out to us! |
January Updates Yearly Recap The State of Maryland has competed for federal grants effectively in the past year. The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act (IIJA) increased the availability of funding substantially for federal discretionary grant programs. As a result, we have developed numerous resources, such as this newsletter, and updated the MDOT grant webpages to support our state and local partners as they explore and apply for federal grant funding.
Our MDOT Federal Discretionary Grants Interactive Map Application has been vetted by ESRI and accepted as a resource within ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World. This allows the public to explore data from ESRI and thousands of other organizations on how they are visualizing data and solving
problems.
MDOT representatives presented at the Maryland Association of
Counties on how to leverage federal infrastructure funds. Moderated by Delegate Nick Allen, MDOT team members provided an overview of our resources available to support county grant submissions and discussed upcoming federal discretionary grant opportunities of interest to Maryland counties in calendar year 2024.
In 2023, FRA awarded $16.4 billion for 25 passenger rail projects along the Northeast Corridor (NEC) from the Federal-State Partnership for Intercity Passenger Rail Program. Approximately $7 billion in awards were made to
projects in the State of Maryland, including the Frederick Douglass Tunnel, the Susquehanna River Bridge and Penn Station in Baltimore City. MDOT was awarded an additional $83 million from federal discretionary grants to invest in roads, bridges, public transport, ports and airports; including most notably the electrification at the Port of Baltimore, reimaging the Mondawmin Transit
Station, and to better manage congestion on US 50 during the summer months.
MDOT will continue to seek federal grants whenever appropriate and pursue opportunities for maximizing federal match, as well as exploring avenues for increased state, local and private matching funds. New Grant Resources MDOT is growing our resources to support you! We have developed a pre-recorded technical guidance webinar on the Rebuilding American Infrastructure with Sustainability and Equity (RAISE) grant program, which will be available on our website
soon. Applications are being accepted until February 28, 2024. Stay tuned for additional information from MDOT regarding webinars on federal funding opportunities coming this February.
