The Maryland Transportation Plan and the Maryland Bicycle & Pedestrian Master Plan
The Maryland Transportation Plan MDOT recently released the draft 2050 Maryland Transportation Plan (MTP), which is Maryland's long-range transportation and is called "The Playbook." "The Playbook" provides more than 75 strategies to guide the state's transportation vision and investment priorities successfully for years to come. MDOT is passing “The Playbook” to you for review and comment. Don’t watch from the sidelines - now is your chance to get involved! Learn how your bold calls can help MDOT develop a winning game plan for our future transportation investments over the next 20 years to ensure we are providing safe, reliable, accessible, equitable and sustainable transportation options to Marylanders across the state. Provide feedback by November 20, 2023, to ensure we achieve effective results.
Transportation planning always works better through teamwork. That’s why MDOT would like to receive as much input as possible from key agencies, local/regional partners, Maryland residents and visitors.
Lead the charge and make your voice heard as MDOT heads to the finish line for plan implementation in January
2024.

The Maryland Statewide Bicycle & Pedestrian Master Plan The Maryland Statewide Bicycle & Pedestrian Master Plan (BPMP) is being updated in conjunction with the MTP. The BPMP focuses on updating policies and practices to make
it safer and more convenient to walk, roll and scoot. The BPMP planning process began last winter with an existing conditions evaluation, followed by initial public outreach conducted in the spring. During the summer, the project team met with stakeholders and drafted recommendations to improve walking and biking conditions over the next five to 20 years. A draft plan will be available in the fall for public comment before being adopted in January 2024. Visit the Maryland Statewide Bicycle & Pedestrian Master Plan website for more information and to provide comments on the draft
plan.
In Maryland each year, on average 23 people are killed or injured in grade crossing and trespassing incidents. The Maryland Department of Transportation (MDOT) and Maryland Operation Lifesaver are committed to helping reduce
the number of fatalities and injuries that occur around tracks and trains and to prevent these needless incidents from happening. This year, Rail Safety Week will be observed the week of September 18-24 in North America and encourages the public to help #STOPTrackTragedies. This year, an ongoing campaign called #STOPTrackTragedies features videos highlighting the personal stories of people directly affected by rail crossing or trespassing incidents — including victims, friends and family members, locomotive engineers, and first responders. Click here to view the full campaign. Each day of Rail Safety Week, Maryland and the United States will emphasize a different theme. This year’s themes include: - Monday kicks off the week with the overarching theme of #STOPTrackTragedies and a focus on Media Outreach and
Rail Safety Pledges in states and localities.
- Tuesday focuses on Wearing Red or "Red Out" for Rail Safety and the annual observance of Operation Clear Track in the U.S. and Canada, which emphasizes the importance of obeying crossing safety and anti-trespass laws.
- Wednesday highlights Crossing Safety, with outreach to the public including new and mature drivers, shift workers, school bus drivers and farmers, as well as outdoor enthusiasts, highlighting the importance of the Blue and White Emergency Notification System (ENS) signs at crossings.
- Thursday
emphasizes Transit Safety Thursday and Professional Driver Safety, showcasing how to stay safe as a rail commuter or transit rider, as well as safe choices around railroad tracks and trains for professional drivers.
- Friday focuses on Volunteering for Operation Lifesaver. Share your "Red Out" for Rail Safety photos on social media to encourage partner safety
organizations, schools, railroad employees and the public to join in the effort of spreading the rail safety message.
- Saturday highlights Trespass Prevention, educating pedestrians, cyclists, joggers, college students, people experiencing homelessness and outdoor enthusiasts about the dangers posed by being on or near the tracks.
- Sunday promotes No Photo, Video or Selfie is Worth the Risk, to warn professional and amateur photographers, as well as social media influencers against putting themselves or others in danger by illegally taking photos, videos, or filming near tracks and trains.
To learn more about Operation Lifesaver, Inc. and Rail Safety Week, click here. Operation Lifesaver, Inc. has launched an online rail safety pledge for both kids and adults. It is important that everyone is aware of the risks in order to empower them to make safe choices around railroad tracks and trains. The rail safety pledges are easy to complete and share with family and friends. We urge everyone to take the
Operation Lifesaver Rail Safety Pledge to help raise awareness and spread the safety message!
