Employers have even more reasons to offer commuter benefits in 2023! The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) announced that the Qualified Transportation Fringe Benefit limit in 2023 is increasing to $300 per employee per month, paid through employee pre-tax deductions, employer-provided subsidies, or a combination of both.

The monthly limit for any commute cost including in a car/carpool/vanpool, a transit pass or qualified parking are all $300. Read the entire IRS Revenue Procedure 2022-38 at www.irs.gov.

Sheppard, J.D., M.P.A., Director, Education and Workforce at the Maryland Department of Commerce. The webinar highlighted two important programs: the Business Telework Assistance Grant offered by the Department of Commerce, and the Maryland Commuter Tax Credit administered by MDOT. If your business or organization is already involved in commuter benefit programs, it's likely that you are implementing other practices that reduce your organization's impact on the environment.  If so, don’t keep it a secret! Join nearly 600 businesses and other organizations throughout the state that have shared their green practices through the Maryland Green Registry.

The Maryland Green Registry is a free program created to promote and recognize sustainable practices at organizations of all types and sizes within the state. Businesses, churches, schools, government agencies and other organizations are all invited to join and share the steps they’ve taken to reduce their environmental footprint through energy and water conservation, waste reduction and other practices. Collectively, members have saved more than $98 million annually through sustainable practices.

Member benefits include an online profile promoting your environmental commitment, window decal and use of the logo for marketing materials, access to free technical assistance programs, and eligibility for the annual Maryland Green Registry Sustainability Leadership Awards.

Joining is free and easy to do. The application should take less than 30 minutes to complete and asks you to share at least five of your organization’s environmental best practices and one measurable result. Click the button below to download the application.

The Tri-County Council is preparing a Strategic Highway Safety Plan, working towards zero highway deaths. 

The Tri-County Council for Southern Maryland (TCCSMD) received a grant from the MDOT Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA), Highway Safety Office to complete a Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) for both Charles and St. Mary’s County. The first planning meeting was held on November 22, 2022, and led by George Clark, Certified Community Transit Manager (CCTM), Project Manager for TCCSMD. Attendees included local county planners; police department agencies; and representatives from local hospitals and local Emergency Medical Services.

The SHSP must be completed by June 30, 2023.

The Maryland Strategic Highway Safety Plan (SHSP) is a statewide, coordinated, comprehensive, traffic safety plan to reduce highway fatalities and serious injuries on all public streets and highways. It establishes overall goals and objectives, as well as strategies within each of six key areas. The SHSP is a working document covering the years 2016 through 2023.
